The project consists of the construction of an educational center, included in the Urban and Social Revitalization program of the Historic center of the city of Villena (Alicante).

Through this plan, action is taken in public facilities located in the old town, thus achieving the promotion of currently degraded areas. The objectives that are sought are the following:

– Increasing the offer of public services in the surroundings of the old town, whose endowment is currently minimal.
– Generating a permanent and continuous influx of citizens from other areas of the city to the Historic Center, thus contributing to the normalization of the area.

The proposal is based on a deep respect for the environment. The new architectural language helps to underline the traditional one.

The objective of the project has been to solve the building in the simplest and most complete way possible, attending to the peculiarities of the place, as well as the specificity of its use and the flexibility of its spaces that, in the future, may be adapted to new needs.

The project seeks a balance between the functional, practical and human-scale building that solves the set of needs without giving up a symbolic character typical of a building for public use.

The building is integrated as one more piece in the whole of the old town of Villena. For this purpose, a building is proposed, resolved in a single volume and with a scale that does not distort the buildings that surround it. The sloping roof unifies the fractionated, resistant and whitewashed walls of the facades.

Natural lighting will be the element that qualifies the space, using overhead light and the fractionated walls through which the exterior can be seen as fissures. The sloping roof with greater height enhances the character of the space as a unique and singular volume.


Three basic materials are used on the exterior of the building: a continuous white cladding, a natural limestone in the access area and metallic rectangulars that provide the rusty color in the meeting of the building with the topography of the terrain. The use of rectangulars as a final finish allows to dilute the situation of the ground floor openings in the façade. This effect shows the base of the building as something continuous and safe, allowing with the separation between profiles in certain areas to ensure natural lighting in all rooms.

The choice of materials in the interior responds to reasons of a type not only aesthetic and functional but also of conservation, since a simple and economic maintenance is sought.

The building circulations are paved with natural stone. Linoleum is used in the classrooms, and in the study room a carpet guarantees noise damping.

In certain areas, wall and ceiling cladding is done using oriented wood chipboards, as well as light wood chip panels on the false ceiling of the classrooms. These materials are natural products that provide thermal and acoustic insulation and have great durability.

Sustainability and energy saving

Saving in the use of energy resources has been a fundamental guide in the development of the proposal. From a sustainability point of view, the approach has been to apply, on the one hand, the passive eco-efficient parameters generated by the building’s own design: optimal relationship between orientation / use, natural cross ventilation, natural lighting, cameras air, double glazing, sun protection ,; while on the other hand the active eco-efficient parameters have been applied: sanitary ware and taps with consumption saving systems, adequate choice of lighting and air conditioning systems …

On the first floor, the cafeteria with a covered terrace also becomes a viewpoint towards the Atalaya Castle. In this way, the building, in addition to its educational use, has an added tourist and attraction value, since it provides the old town with a service that is deficient.
